Septimius Severus: The African Emperor is a biography of Lucius Septimius Severus, a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 193 to 211. It was written by Anthony R. Birley, a British historian and professor. It was published in 1972 by Doubleday & Co in New York. It explores Severus background, career, achievements, and legacy. Severus was born in Leptis Magna, a city in present-day Libya, and was of Phoenician descent. He rose to power after a civil war and expanded the Roman Empire to its greatest extent. He also reformed the army, the administration, and the legal system. He died in Britain after a campaign against the Caledonians. The book has 320 pages.
