The novel tells the story of Ellen Roxburgh, a young Cornish woman who travels to Australia with her husband in the early nineteenth century. After surviving a shipwreck on a coral reef, she is captured by Aboriginal people and later rescued by an escaped convict. She returns to civilization transformed by her experiences of hardship, violence, and love. The novel explores the themes of identity, culture, and survival in a colonial setting.
