A collection of nine comic short stories on Jewish themes and characters by Stanley Elkin, an American novelist and essayist. The stories showcase Elkins exuberant and satirical style, as well as his concern with the human condition in a consumerist society. The stories include On a Field, Rampant, a fable about a medieval knight who encounters a modern-day salesman; Perlmutter at the East Pole, a farce about a Jewish Santa Claus who tries to reform Christmas; and A Poetics for Bullies, a stylized portrait of a teenage thug who meets his match. The collection was first published by Random House in 1966 and reprinted by Anthony Blond in the UK in 1967. It has 272 pages.
